There are many unbearable moments in “The Greatest Love Story Never Told”, the documentary about the filming of “This Is Me… Now”, the 2024 musical film about Jennifer Lopez’s last self-titled album about her reunion with her historical love and fourth husband, Ben Affleck. But what follows is one of the worst.
After expressing her anxiety about the reluctance of other actors to star in the film, Lopez brings up her spouse. “I don’t think he’s very comfortable with me doing all this,” she explains to her manager, Benny Medina. “But he loves me, he knows I’m an artist and he’s going to support me in any way he can….. He can’t stop me.”
Immediately, Affleck, after making some empathetic comments, reflects: “I’ve always thought that things that are private are sacred and special… partly because they are private… So this was kind of an adaptation for me.” It’s the Chekhov pistol of ready-made phrases.
The couple’s first romance failed in 2003 under the weight of media attention, just days before their wedding. Now, with an album, a film and a documentary about the second round of the relationship, López has invited that scrutiny again, despite the obvious reluctance of her beloved. In the context of the breakup rumors that have surfaced in the last week, it seems like a catastrophic error of judgment.
